Spring is inspiring! Probably more than any other season, springs motivates us to explore, appreciate, and connect. Here are a few books that capture the reasons why we love spring! I found most of these wonder-full books at local bookstores while visiting Seattle and fell in love with each of them.
Spring can seem like it will never come! And if you plant a garden, it can appear to take even longer. In and then it's spring by Julie Fogliano and Erin E. Stead, a young boy waits and waits while worrying about his seeds. While he impatiently waits, he imagines all sorts of things that happened to explain why his seeds have not grown, but then it is spring. A great book that captures the way young children feel about many things in their lives! A perfect segue into a conversation about not only spring and plants but also about patience and time.
Haiku Baby by Betsy E. Snyder explores the seasons through haiku. This simple, joyful board book will be enjoyed by children of all ages, though. Start a conversation about the differences between the seasons with this book!
Explore the sounds of the season in Listen, Listen by Phillis Gershator and Alison Jay. This cheerfully illustrated book looks at seasons through their sounds. After reading this, ask your child about the noises in winter and if they are quieter or louder than the sounds of spring.
The Nest by Jorey Hurley is a simple board book that follows a baby bird as it grows up and through the seasons. This almost wordless book explores the life-cycle of birds in a unique, and exciting way that even the youngest child will enjoy!
Think your child is too young for The Secret Garden? Well, maybe they are for the original, but the lovely BabyLit board book series brings classics to life for even the youngest child. The Secret Garden: A BabyLit Flower Primer by Jennifer Adams and Alison Oliver includes images of flowers and their names, and it's a wonderful introduction to the different flowers that might be growing in your garden or you are likely to find on a walk.
As humans, even little humans, we often forget to see the amazing, magical things happening around us. In Something Extraordinary by Ben Clanton, a little boy wishes for something to happen to him but finally discovers the wonder and magic of a flower blooming. A delightful book for all ages that reminds all of us to appreciate the things around us!
